!!!!.....!!!!.....!!!!!

Please forgive this brief placeholder of a post as I am only barely regaining the feeling in my extremities after Monday. I just returned from New York and two much longer posts are coming at least...at least.

Sheesh.

I knew before this week that I had a nice family, good friends, and a pretty great publisher. But this week everyone so gracefully rose to this occasion. They covered beautifully for me and my shortcomings.

More on that later, but first—

I am so humbled to be sharing space with these two illustrators.

More soon! Thank you for the comments and apologies for this brief placeholder.

P.S. Three of my favorite frequent blog stops made some nice posts. Check them out! The first shows video of the announcements and shots of the crowd at 100 Scope Notes.

The second is the ever informative and fun to read Peter Sieruta at Collecting Children's Books.

And the third is Seven Impossible Things Before Breakfast who posted some celebratory posts, all of which are great. The book on the most recent post looks amazing.

  4. Wow, Erin!! This is Sarah from Borders...I'm SO excited for you!! I'm a school librarian in Maryland now and was just talking about you with some people I know--discussing children's books of course! I was talking about working with people that inspired me to get into libraianship. Your knowledge, enthusiasm, and love has been something I've thought about so much over the past years. I knew you would do something big in children's literature and that you won the Caldecott doesn't surprise me!!!!!!!! You're AMAZING!!! (I've been bragging to my students all week!) Way to go! :)

  5. You and Philip have created something that will last a long, long time. Amos' quiet beauty and gentle humor is a tribute to the human spirit.

  7. Awww..I love that "Sick Day for Everyone" sign.

Also, still feeling like I don't have words to create a proper congratulations. But...Amos has been sitting in our living room since he got here and I walk by several times each day. And, even before you went and got famous, it made me smile each time. Now, I suspect, SOOO many more people will get to have that same experience. Thanks for spreading happiness. :D

  8. Somehow it seems fitting that you would use your first post after the announcements to honor Bryan Collier and David Ezra Stein.

    Your book is magic.

  9. Amos is more awesome than a truck full of pudding.

    Okay, now I sound like a 20-year-old (or a five-year-old?), but.... well...it's true.

    Congrats again!

  10. Congrats from me too!

And did you know you set TWO Caldecott records?

First, you are the youngest Caldecott winner ever -- beating Robert McCloskey (ROBERT MCCLOSKEY!!) by several months.

Secondly, you are the first illustrator to ever win the Caldecott for your very first book.

It's great to see a fellow Michigander make history!

  11. Hi Erin, could you and Phillip come to Dallas Texas to visit the Lamplighter School? We don't have an elephant or a tortoise or penguin or rhinoceros or owl, but we do have lots of chickens, eggs, a rooster, a cow, 2 goats and a pig! We sell eggs at our school but we would be glad to give you some eggs for free. We love authors and illustrators and would consider it an honor for you all to come.

  12. Hi Erin, Congratulations! Was thrilled for you when the award was announced. I'm on the board of the AA Book Festival and would like to discuss a possible event for the next festival. When you have a moment give me a call at the store Tues-Thur or at home. I'm in the book. All the best. Sharon Gambin

  13. I wanted to write and congratulate you on winning the Caldecott Medal for your illustrations in A Sick Day for Amos! Thank you so much for taking such a great amount of time to create such a wonderful and beautiful work. The detail and refinement of your work provide a model for which all other illustrators should strive. Your contribution to children's literature is incredible. Your precise, vintage style illustrations give your work such a sophisticated and classic appeal that is rarely seen in children's literature today. I look forward to seeing more of your work in the future! Best of luck in your future endeavors! Adam Ford(Student at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville)

  15. Hi Erin,
My children and I fell in love with A Sick Day for Amos McGee when we purchased it yesterday at the preschool's bookfair.
Do you live in Ann Arbor? We are coming there from Virginia in June for a vacation while our oldest daughter swims at the University of Michigan. If you are around the area I would be so honored if you would sign our book.
    Thank You! Karen Lehmann
